History

Historical Background of Tirurangadi Block Panchayat

  • Cheranad Province: The Tirurangadi region was historically a part of the renowned Cheranad province. Initially under the rule of the Zamorins of Kozhikode, this province later became part of the Ernad taluk under the Malabar district during the British colonial period. Tirurangadi stands out prominently in the history of the freedom struggle, serving as one of the major epicenters of the 1921 Malabar Rebellion.
  • Formation of the Block Panchayat: The Tirurangadi Block Panchayat came into being as a continuation of the development blocks established across India as part of the Community Development Programme aimed at rural development.
  • Modern Administrative System: The Tirurangadi Block Panchayat in its present form officially commenced operations following the introduction of the three-tier panchayat system in Kerala under the Panchayat Raj Act (the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments).
  • Role and Development: Through rural development initiatives, agriculture, animal husbandry, poverty alleviation, and the planning and implementation of various welfare schemes, the block panchayat plays a crucial role in the progress of the region.
